CONTEMPLATING DEEPWATER (Cleansing The Gulf Coast)Oil on Canvas, 5 ft. h. x 4 ft. w., 2011, currently on view at the Grain Belt Bottling House, Suite 103A, Minneapolis. This painting was a response to the BP Deepwater oil spill, an imagined view as if standing on the deck of a barge vacuuming oil from the water. Starting with a murky abstraction of the oil-stained water, the artist gradually scraped and lightened the canvas repeatedly, thus metaphorically 'cleansing' the Gulf Coast. It was the centerpiece painting of the solo exhibit, "An Artist Responds to Nature's Elements," at the Marsh of Minnetonka, MN, winter 2016.
